My now late father had sown the outdoor seed from a very early age, his Canadian stories only fuelled my desire to never stop exploring and take every opportunity to travel when it comes my way. Fortunately, I had the chance to experience a luxury adventure in Canada with my family.
As a child my father would tell me stories of how he travelled across Canada in the early 60’s with nothing more than a rucksack, the kindness of the locals and hitchhiking for transport. The stories would leave me spellbound, the scene he would paint sounded like adventure utopia. A place so epic in scale my imagination could barely comprehend what it was like.
When I first started Momentum, it had been a lifelong dream to work in the outdoors, I never knew it could be a real job after all it was a dream! It was over five years before I finally got the chance to venture into Canada. I had so many mixed feelings, nerves, excitement, where to go (it’s a big place!). I just hoped the picture my father had painted of Canada lived up to my vision of a wilderness paradise.
Meet Matthew Robertson, Founder of Momentum Adventure while he explores new opportunities for luxury adventure in Canada
I was travelling with my family and I was so over excited, I think I was driving them all mad, let’s go here, hike there, try the local food, explore…
As soon as we stepped off the plane in Vancouver, I knew my father was right. Huge totem poles with incredible carvings adorned the airport, it seemed everywhere we looked, was a salute to the wilderness and the First Nation culture. Even passport control were incredibly friendly!
Words would fail to describe the following ten days with my family. But I’ll give it go!
We totally immersed ourselves in our luxury adventure in Canada by getting into the Canadian lifestyle, morning walks in the lush forests with trees the size of buildings, eating local fresh food, kayaking with orca, bear watching, seeing eagles dive right in front of us, whipping out huge fish, it was like living in a wildlife documentary. The days just disappeared, seamlessly blending into an incredible collection of experiences.
I remember one of the most profound moments was sitting around a fire with my family while Adahy, a local First Nation told stories of his ancestors and sung haunting powerful songs – we were all totally captivated. It was a moment we will cherish forever and ultimately so simple: culture, the outdoors, love and laughter.
The stories and the dreams of Canada being an adventure paradise for families is so true and a wonderful recipe for the perfect family escape.
