Tech v’s the outdoors
I love my iPad, I’m using it right now, but it seems this ominous bit of kit could be my nemesis when it comes to my family. It’s easy for me to put down, but it seems I’m spending more and more time competing with technology for my kid’s attention.
Me: “Son, lets go play outside”
Son: ”no thanks”
Me: “lets ride our bikes?”
Me: “climb a tree?”
Trying to convince my kids to dump the tech and play outside is a modern day battle and requires thinking outside the box. How can a rainy and overcast day compete with instant messages, Facebook, Snapchat or Instagram?
I think I may have found a way to slay the tech dragon, or maybe just give the dragon a day off.
I love the outdoors for so many reasons. It’s never about the rush, the adrenaline – it’s the simple joy it can bring. Riding your bike or going for a walk, but choosing to take a different route can bring unexpected treasures and amazing moments.
I know this, I have experienced it. I love it and it’s my passion.
I know this, I have experienced it. I love it and it’s my passion. But trying to convince a ten-year-old of this, seems to end with a blank expression and “dad, what are you talking about..?”.
On our bikes…
I tried the tactic of attraction rather than promotion.
“Hey fancy checking out an old well I found in the field?” My son raised an eyebrow, it worked! iPad down and we were off!
Racing through the fields on his bike, as he leads the way – he was my guide and we were both loving it. I kept following with encouragement as we headed deeper into the countryside. We eventually stopped in the middle of a beautiful field. We jumped off the bikes and lay on our backs while we caught our breath looking up at the sky and the cloud formations above…
We both said nothing, just lay there, exhilarated from our ride and taking in our surroundings. Then my son grabbed my hand, that moment was priceless!
It was AMAZING! No tech in the world can replace the power of experience, and the simple pleasures of reconnecting with your loved ones whilst enjoying the outdoors.
For today the score was:
