I’m just waiting for my kids to return home from school and I’m lost in thought…
The other day I asked my 10-year-old son what he would like to be when he’s grows up?
What do you want to be when you’re older?
I then I thought to myself; I had no idea what I wanted to do until I was thirty-something! Its such a profound question, as my son has not even really experienced life yet, let alone think about a dream job.
My son’s response to me was “I want to do what you do”. “Why is that?” I asked “Because you have fun with your work, you see amazing things and whenever you talk about it you smile and get so excited”.
Not a mention of space man, train driver or fireman. He likes the idea of having fun and being outdoors. I have to say, it made my heart sing!
I did have to mention to him that there’s a lot of hard graft that comes with the job. But I am also incredibly thankful that I work in a field I love and am truly passionate about. I may not be a wealthy man, but I like to think I’m a happy one.
I guess I knew all along I wanted to work adventure. I just had no idea it was a real job, let alone a career.
I’m not one for leaving a legacy, to me it’s all about enjoying the ride. Life seems to throw all sorts of challenges at you along the way. But in my experience, it’s the simple pleasures that bring the biggest joys.
Chatting with my son on a walk in the woods, is a mini adventure. Simple and infinitely rewarding…
